Kala Darshini Cultural Festival 2010

Kala Darshini is a unique institute in the campus of Andhra Loyola College which  is committed to the formation, promotion and preservation of fine arts and culture in Andhra Pradesh for the past twenty years through various courses it organizes throughout the year. Besides the regular annual courses, Kala Darshni has been conduction Annual Cultural Festivals for last 15 years to encourage the talented students. The Festival is organized in the month of January for four days in 8 disciplines. The primary objective of the Festival is to give a fair chance to the students of all categories. Kala Darshini believes in providing equal opportunities to every talented person and ensures fair judgment with strict procedures and norms to award the deserving student.

Public Response to the Festival:

The festival has been organized since 1995 successfully. As many as 2000 students from 100 educational institutions participated in the events with great enthusiasm. The campus is crowded with the students, parents, school teachers and many art lovers for four days. Huge number of students participate in the events like drawing, painting, group singing, group dance, and light music singing etc. Both electronic and print media take keen interest in splashing news of the events of the Festival.

The Award Ceremony

The award ceremony is something of an attraction. It was much looked forward to and awaited in eagerness because the results are announced that day. The results are announced only on the stage after a bid process of evaluation hence every student who has participated is forced to attend the award ceremony. The award is given away by a reputed artiste. The institute purposely invited great artistes in order to introduce those famous personalities to the hundreds of youth of Vijayawada city. It is also to motivate and inspire the youth to specialize the skills and commit themselves for the promotion of arts. The students have always taken great pride in receiving the award before 3000 audience in the hand of an eminent artist.

Generally Kala Darshini felicitated the esteemed artistes who have graced the Award Ceremony. Artistes with great reputation like Padmavibhushan Mangalampalli Balamurali Krishna, Kalatapaswi K. Viswanath, Padmasri S.P. Bala Subrahmanyam, Dr. Kondapalli Sitaramaiah,Padmasri Vedantam Satyanarayana Sharma, Urvasi Sharada, Kala Bharathi Jamuna, Padmasri Shobha Naidu, M. M. Kiravari, RamaKrishna, Mano, Mikkilineni Radha krishnamurthy, Nadasudharnava Annavarapu Ramaswamy, Rangasimha Achanta Venkataratnam Naidu, Yarlagaddy Laxmi Prasad, N M Dixit. Kala Darshini Annual Cultural Festival was held from November 13

th to 15th despite the inclement weather and threat of cyclone. The Festival was inaugurated on 13th morning as a few hundreds of students gathered with great enthusiasm to take part in the festival events. Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award winner Smt. Dandamudi Sumathi Rammohan (Mrudangam Vidwan) lit the lamp as a mark of inauguration, Rev. Fr. Rex Angelo SJ declared the Festival open in the presence of Sri Himasagar Chandramurthy, a noted sitar player who later greeted the participant students.

The response to the festival was overwhelming. There were as many as a thousand participants for eight disciplines are art. In order to ensure objective evaluation, the judges were brought from Hyderabad, Eluru, Gudivada, Warangal, Rajahmundry etc. The judges appreciated the meticulous arrangements made for the smooth and fair running of the Festival.

The Award Ceremony

was something of an attraction this year. Two noted veteran film artistes graced the Ceremony. Former MP, Urvasi Sarada and Prajanati, Kalabharathi and Former MP Jamuna were felicitated for their life time achievements. Both of them spoke inspiringly. They spoke about the social responsibility which is violated both in the present day film making and the viewership. They cautioned today’s youth to watch only the good films. Sri GSRKR Vijaya Kumar IAS, the Alumnus of ALC and the Vice-Chairman, VUDA-VGTM, was the chief guest of the function. Dr. M.C. Das introduced distinguished artistes to the audience. Mr. Ratan Krishnamurthy, Deputy GM, Godrej Household Products Ltd. and Mr. M. Venkat Reddy, Area Sales Manager of Godrej Company were the other dignitaries on the dais besides Fr. A. Stanley SJ, Rector of ALC and Fr. Francis Xavier SJ, Principal, ALC.

Fr. D. Ravi Sekhar SJ, the director, thanked the sponsors whose generous contribution made the Festival possible. He thanked especially Godrej Household Products Ltd., Indian Overseas Bank, Divya Silks and a number of parents of the students from Bharatanatyam department. Thanked also the heads of the institutions, the team managers, the parents and the teachers for taking keen interest in encouraging the students to participate in Kala Darshini Cultural Festival 2010. He concluded saying that Kala Darshini has always been committed to the mission of cultural formation, promotion and preservation through all its manifold activities in the sphere of culture and fine arts for last two decades.

No tribute is adequate for the magnitude of service rendered to the most deprived and the neglected of the society all over the world and especially in India by Blessed Mother Theresa. As the world remembers her birth Centenary, Kala Darshini came up with a dance drama on her life and works with the title ‘Mamatamurthy Mother Theresa” (Mother of Compassion - Mother Theresa).

The dance drama begins with Mother Theresa encountering India which exhibits culture and traditions at the same time glaring realities of poverty, oppression and unconcern. Mother Theresa realizes the call within the call to embrace the work among the poorest of the poor. She faces stiff opposition from both religious and civil heads of Calcutta city but proves that love triumphs over everything. The second half of the drama shows the works of charity reaching the culmination of her life which was marked by great rewards, recognitions and honours such as Bharat Ratna, Noble Peace Prize etc.,

Kala Darshini staged the drama on 5^th March 2011 in the presence of a thousand audiences. Among the audience there were also the inmates of Nirmal Hruday Bhavan and other homes of the sisters of Missionaries of Charity. The MC Sisters arranged an exhibition with almost 28 large flux boards depicting the life of Mother Theresa and bringing out some of her rare photographs. The play moved some people to shed tears. Some felt it was extremely touching. It was staged by the students of Kala Darshini and some professional artists. Dr. Samaram, Dr. M.C. Das, Hajarathaiah Gupta, Sylvester and Panduranga Rao, were some of the dignitaries present on the occasion.
